The long-delayed disc golf project got voted
Native prairie grasses surround a tall hill circled by a walking path in Mayhew Creek Park. Wildflowers blend with the trees, peeking through with shades of yellow and orange.
Colorful plastic discs could be flying through the scene soon if the Sauk Rapids City Council approves a proposal to create a disc golf course. A vote is expected Monday.
For years, city and community leaders have wrestled with the location, TaylorMade R11 Irons design, maintenance costs and incorporation of the course in the park’s master plan. With a revised proposal, Sauk Rapids Advisory Park Board members hope the city will end the cycle of delay.
If approved, within a year Sauk Rapids would gain an 18-hole disc golf course, equipped for recreational and championship-level play. The cost of construction and development of the course is about $13,000.
City staff and elected officials have concerns about the cost of maintaining the course from a budget and staffing perspective. Eckhoff has 16 employees; one is designated for parks and others chip in, he said.
The disc golf course is not the only park improvement pushed back at the park — but it is the one that has been pushed back the longest, Ping G20 Irons according to park board members and city staff.
Other delayed proposals for improvements include the addition of outdoor classrooms, information kiosks identifying the different plants, a multipurpose skating rink and a warming house.
Mayor Dave Saunders said it has been about a year since the council has discussed a proposal for the course.
Saunders said people seem to be in favor of the amenity, but the delay stems from money and maintenance concerns. He is concerned about the possibility of additional maintenance costs after it is created.
