Jack Nicklaus still feels Tiger Woods can overhaul his record of 18 major championships despite his fellow American slumping to 46th in the current world rankings.
It was shortly after that win in Melbourne that revelations of infidelities led to the collapse of his marriage and a break from the sport while his 2011 season has been interrupted by injuries.
But Nicklaus is still backing Tiger to come good again "if he gets the five inches between his ears squared out."
"I mean Tiger has a great work ethic, he's a great competitor, the most talented kid on the planet right now," said Nicklaus, speaking in South Korea where he's attending a Champions Tour event being played on a course he designed.
Tiger Woods failed to qualify for the season-ending FedExCup play-offs which conclude in Atlanta next week after missing the cut at the USPGA Championship.
He had returned after three months out with knee and Achilles tendon injuries to finish 37th at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational the week before the year's final major.
Usually, Woods would skip the less prestigious Fall Series events but, needing game time, he confirmed recently that he would be playing the Frys.com Open in California on October 6-9.
"I always enjoy competing in my home state and this tournament fits my schedule perfectly," the former world number one said on his website.
"One of my goals this year was to participate in a tournament I hadn't played before and now I will."
Woods had already announced that he would play in the Australian Open in Sydney from November 10-13 - the Presidents Cup then takes place shortly after in Melbourne. Tiger has just two top 10 finishes in eight starts in 2011, hence his slide down the world rankings.
