While the publication’s most recent roll call, unveiled on Sunday, boasts mostly company executives, Woods had been among the rich and powerful since the tally debuted in 1998.
Following his sex scandal, Woods slipped from No. 3 in 2009 to eighth place last year, at which time the magazine noted Woods had lost $30 million in endorsements from sponsors like AT&T and Gillette.
Despite the bad press and off-course behavior, Golf Inc. observed that Woods still earned $105 million -- more than any other athlete in the 12 months between the ’09 and 2010 lists. "It’s safe to say that Tiger Woods has bounced back from what some thought would be the end of his career," Golf Inc. editors wrote last year. "Overall, the business of being Tiger Woods has remained surprisingly solid."
It’s a different story this year for the erstwhile No. 1, whose golf course design company has run into snags and whose divorce resulted in "a sharp and sudden fall," said Golf Inc. "His return to tournament play has been plagued by injuries that had him sitting out both the U.S. and British Opens and withdrawing from the Players Championship after only nine holes," the editors wrote. "Woods capped off the summer by firing his long-time caddy following his drop below number 20 in world rankings."
As for Golf Inc.’s top-ranked mover and shaker in the golf industry, that would be Dana Garmany, chief executive of Troon Golf. He and ClubCorp CEO Eric Affeldt switched places in the past 12 months, with Affeldt now holding down the second spot. Jack Nicklaus remained No. 3, thanks to his golf course design firm, while Gary Player and Gary Player Design dropped from fifth to sixth. PGA Tour CEO Tim Finchem also fell off slightly, slipping from sixth to seventh in Golf Inc.’s lineup, while his European PGA Tour counterpart, George O’Grady, jumped from No. 19 to ninth place.
